Upcoming Reviews

21 01 2010

Good Morning and Greetings Everyone!

So I’ve offered, and it appears they have accepted, to review ‘Building iPhone Apps with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript’. My plan will be to read through the whole book then write out a couple straightforward Apps using it to use as not only a review on the quality of the book, and how much it allowed to figure the process out.

If you have anything specific you might want me to watch for on it, let me know. Otherwise I’ll have the final review after the test examples are done!

Merry Christmas!

Albiet Belated, Merry Christmas everyone!

I would have posted sooner, but was without Internet access for a while.

I hope the holidays treated everyone well!

Thanksgiving Day Update

26 11 2009

Happy Thanksgiving everyone.

Postings here have been sparse on all fronts. My apologies for that. But i my defense I have been putting effort into some personal projects including one for the VTT Platform Fantasy Grounds II. Specifically we’re hammering out the last steps of a deal that will have me developing an official ruleset for the platform and follow up adventures. I’m looking forward to that. But between that and the job I work to actually pay bills (And that one takes more time than I like to admit. Its funny how once you leave the front line peon level you find yourself putting in more and more time for the same money) I haven’t had a lot of free time to play around here and offer up my glow bits of inane wisdom and commentary.

I have a really good friend that is actually a Rocket Scientist. He’s an Astrophysisist. I must say I really enjoy talking with him. We often find ourselves discussing topics ranging from Economy to climate. I need to work on getting him to sign on here. I think having a place to post his thoughts and finding would be good for him.

Anyway, I’m off to spend the day with friends, food and games. I hope everyone has a pleasent Thanksgiving holiday!

Death of an MMO

20 07 2009

Well it appears that Richard Garriott’s Tabula Rasa, an Sci-Fi MMORPG that was pushed out and had some original concepts for merging a magic system with a High Technology Sci-fi environment, has finally closed its doors. This is a sad day to me because while I think the game itself hit a stonewall regarding playability, it was definitely not something outside the realm of fixing.

The game had a crafting system that desperately needed retooling. Perhaps turning it into a crafting/modding system for equipment. That would have gone a long way with the Sci-Fi theme and made for potentially interesting equipment mods as well. But added to that was just storyline limitations and the general hurdle you run into on any PlayNC game. There isn’t a lot of diversity in what you do. Grind, grind, grind. The game would have done well to have some more puzzles and played more on the exploration of the worlds you were on. Not to mention they had a great base from a PVP system, they should have considered opening up access to the Bane side and given us the ability to fight back and forth on that end.

Either way, the final decision they came to appears to have been to shut the servers down. Hopefully we’ll see some more Sci-Fi MMOs in the future and they will be implemented in a way to helps them stick around.

Rampage of Darth Cheney Continues….

13 07 2009

So I’m scanning the news this morning and I come across an article going into detail how Cheney is making a major annoyance of himself even after the fiasco he and Bush made of the administration not even 8 months ago.

The article goes on to talk about how that now, not only shouldwe be calling for this guy to be tossed into prison for violations of human rights, and violation of our Constitutional Rights,  now they are finding he was creating secret programs and not disclosing their existance to Congress or the Intelligence Committe. A huge action of questionable legality.

When faced with this and the long litany of actions Cheney had done of the 8 years the Bush Administration was in office, what does elements in the government do? Do they show signs of horror at the abuse of the sytem. Do they call for justice in outrage?

No, they only show mild concern:

Feinstein, who chairs the Senate Intelligence Committee, said: “Director Panetta did brief us two weeks ago — I believe it was on the 24th of June … and, as had been reported, did tell us that he was told that the vice president had ordered that the program not be briefed to the Congress.”

Asked if the matter should be investigated, Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin said: “Absolutely.”

“The executive branch of government cannot create programs like these programs and keep Congress in the dark. There is a requirement for disclosure,” Durbin said on ABC’s “This Week.”

“It has to be done in an appropriate way so it doesn’t jeopardize our national security. But to have a massive program that is concealed from the leaders in Congress is not only inappropriate, it could be illegal.”

Nice strong stance from Congress and the Senate Intelligence Committee. Its nice to know there is still passion in the government when a real wrong has been discovered. We certainly wouldn’t want anyone to misunderstand where everyone stands on this issue.

Senator Jeff Sessions, the ranking Republican on the Judiciary Committee, told “Face the Nation” he said he believed the allegations against Cheney will be investigated.

Asked if he expected the situation to be looked into, Sessions said: “Well, I’m sure it will be.”

“I don’t know what the facts are. But I believe that Vice President Cheney served his country with as much fidelity as he could possibly give to it. And he tried to serve us in an effective way. And I hope that nothing like this would impact on his outstanding record.”

Outstanding record… Human Rights Violations, Play part in the largest disruption of Personal liberties to this nation since the Civil War, Creating Programs of Questionable Legality… On yea. This guy is a pillar of the community. We should be erecting monuments for him, not thinking about putting his dirty ass in jail for a long, long time.

Its times like this, when I see things of this nature, that I truly understand and am disgusted by the level of corruption that has settled into this nation. Someone with power is caught flat out doing something treasonous and the most people can come up with is ‘I hope this doesn’t tarnish his good name’.

StarCraft 2 News Updates

6 07 2009

Doing my daily scan of news across the board, and I came across this article on ArsTechnica about StarCraft 2.

The first thing to know is that I’m not a avid news watcher for upcoming games. I don’t actively review them for anyone, though I’ve thought about adding a section specifically for that here. Still might happen in the future. I do, however, feel the need to comment on game news I read when I think there is a point to be acknowledged that nobody is really commenting enough on. That is the case here with StarCraft 2.

I’m an old player of Starcraft. I enjoyed the first game a great deal and it’s expansions. As a matter of fact, I though they were so well done for their time that I still, on  occasion, load them up and play them.

That being said, following the news on the sequal has been interesting. First off we have the fact that it has taken them a really long time to get it made. A really long time. We’ve gone through several interations of the Windows Operating system since the last release of Starcraft.

Second, in all that time of development, somehow they have concluded that they don’t need to keep support for LAN games. This mindset truly baffles me because one of the largest group of people who played Starcraft was people who regulary played at LAN Parties. Starcraft was a staple game for them and everyone had a copy. So if that was they case, what would bring a company to the decision that slapping those fans of the game int he face would be a good idea? Unfortunately I don’t have an answer to that.

As it stands, I’ve seen the three ‘Battle Reports’ for the game and seen the screenshots. It looks like a solid RTS game. I’m hoping that the storyline from the single player can hold muster with the rest of it.

Talk amongst yourselves. I’ll give you a topic…

30 06 2009

What principles are being upheld by rejecting something free purely out of spite? Are we so engrossed in our own feelings of entitlement?

http://arstechnica.com/science/news/2009/06/irrational-markets-people-reject-free-money-out-of-anger.ars

I find it disturbing, but ultimately not surprising considering the number of Reality TV shows that are still broadcasting.

Where O’ where has the decent broadband gone?

24 06 2009

So once again I’m fighting with my internet access trying to keep myself connected. This time is manifests as a connection that will connect for a few minutes and then will drop and lose connectivity. I unplug it, plug it back it and it sometimes comes back and works for a while again, but inevitably over time it will drop again.

Whatever happened to quality? This is something I wonder a lot about these days. Everyone is so hell bent of the elusive dollar that nobody stops to enjoy anything anymore. And companies chew and spit out customers left and right. There is no loyalty as a consumer or as a provider it seems like. And you can see that same front in so many areas. Work, friends, neighbors. All of them.

Man thats disappointing to realize.

Podcastig Functionality Reviewed

22 06 2009

Well, I sort of expected podcast implementation to be somewhat more difficult. Granted I still need to finish working out how the meta tags play into it correctly for things like iTunes, but I’m not overly worried about that part. At least the functionality on meta tags is rather straightforward. Unlike Meta Tags, finding any really good information on podcast creation that doesn’t involve ‘Oh hey, our software can do that! Buy it!’ can be a little difficult.

I’m not sure If I’ll set up a permanent podcast. I don’t currently have anything I would need to do one on. But its been interesting experimenting with the setup.

Perhaps a reader might have a suggestion on something we could put together a podcast on. Any ideas on something you would be interested in listening to?

Let me know.
